F.A.Q.
Do I need a drum kit at home to keep up with the lessons?

While it is certainly encouraged to have access to an acoustic or electrontic drum kit, there are alternative options. For beginners, a practice pad which costs an average of $40 will allow you to practice the rhythmic exercises, as you progress in your lessons however it will become more difficult to develop your skills without access to a kit.

Do I need to be able to read music theory?

The short answer - no. Everyone learns differently and Curlew has taught drummers of equal skill and determination, regardless of their ability to read music. Despite this, understanding how to read music can in places greatly improve your ability to learn new pieces and styles faster. Curlew finds that teaching how to read music goes naturally in tandem with learning a new instrument so it's often something that is included with your lesson plan.

If something comes up, is it easy to cancel or reschedule a lesson?

While we do ask for a minimum of 24 hours notice to a change in schedule, exceptions can be made in case of emergencies.

How will I know if my child is progressing?

Curlew has an open and transparent relationship with students and parents alike. Setting short, medium, and long term goals is a great way to realise our progress. Curlew welcomes parents to sit in on their child's lesson and have a chat afterwards about how they are developing and strategies that can improve or help in their practice at home if necessary.

How frequently should I be scheduling lessons?

There's no real right amount of lessons when it comes to music. Curlew suggests at least once a week depending on your skill level and how quickly you want to develop your technique. There are many reasons why a strict weekly lesson might not work for you but that should not get in the way of you realising your drumming goals. Curlew offers flexible lesson plans tailored to you, so if you are unsure don't hesitate to ask about alternative lesson structures.
